Animals & Nature in Peril

The Thai Army, the Black Rangers, has rescued 150 Pangolins being smuggled from Myanmar to China, via Thailand.

This is the biggest seizure yet of live Pangolins in the city of Chiang Mai, with an estimated value of 3m Thai Baht.

The Pangolin is primarily illegally traded for its scales, which are believed to have strong medical benefits in Traditional Chinese Medicine, although the young are made into soup.

However, no medical evidence exists supporting these beliefs although tens of thousands of Pangolins are cruelly poached in the wild and traded illegally.

World Animal Protection works with the Thai government to improve welfare conditions for wild animals seized in the crackdown against the illegal wildlife trade.

The trade in these amazing animals is a serious threat to their survival.

Le Macareux moine (Fratercula arctica), également dit « perroquet de mer », est une espèce d'oiseau marin pélagique nord-atlantique qui vit en haute mer, sauf lors de sa reproduction qui le contraint à rejoindre la terre ferme où il niche sur les pentes enherbées, les îles ou sur des falaises (insulaires ou continentales).

Le nom scientifique de l'espèce, Fratercula arctica, signifie « petit frère de l'Arctique » en latin ; la mention petit frère (ainsi que sa dénomination moine) est sûrement à rapprocher de son plumage[réf. nécessaire].

Il est le symbole de la Ligue pour la protection des oiseaux (LPO).

Animal Facts

Pangolins can reach 3.2 feet in length and weight of nearly 40 pounds. Males and females of the Indian pangolin (one of the species) can be easily distinguished, because males can be 90% heavier than females.

The Pink Dolphin

Also known as the Amazon river dolphin, this striking creature, being freshwater, plies his trade in all the rivers and channels.

Apart from being freshwater, they are different to other dolphins in that they do not have a dorsal fin, but a hump, and can move their head from side to side. The name is literal, too – given enough exposure to the sun, a pink dolphin can match a flamingo in hue.
