Elusive Light by Hougaard Malan

There are really only two elements to landscape photography. One is finding amazing landscapes and the other is waiting there for amazing light. This can make it very expensive to get great images as you often have to wait days to get the right shot while your travel expenses keep climbing. The tell-tale sign that you're going to get good light is usually a gap on the horizon where the sun has to set/rise which will allow the light to shine in below the clouds and illuminate the landscape. I learned the hard and expensive way that at Torres del Paine that gap on the horizon doesn't gaurantee good light. My best assumption would be that there was often a cloud system a few hundred kilometres away below the horizon which was obstructing the light. Of my ten mornings there, only on one of them did I get full light below the clouds. This was that morning and as you can see the result is unbelievable. It's these moments that landscape photographers spend the whole year chasing and if they weren't so rare then landscape photography would be a lot easier.
