"Christophe Soumillon expects to ride again in France before the end of the season after being sidelined since fracturing his elbow on September 9 in a fall at Nancy. The 28-year-old, who has lost his retainer with the Aga Khan to Christophe Lemaire, will spend Arc weekend working for the French racing channel Equidia.
Soumillon was riding a filly called Burlada in a claimer when she veered right early in the straight into a hedge which was serving as a running rail, throwing her rider across the track into into the path of a beaten horse.
He lay on the ground for about an hour and was found to have an open fracture of his left elbow, afterwhich he was operated on in the local hospital and two pins inserted into his left arm.
Soumillon on Monday issued a positive update. "All is going very well with my elbow," he said.
"The plaster came off my arm two weeks ago and I am having intense physiotherapy," he added.
"I have no fixed date as to when I will be riding again but I will certainly be in the saddle again before going off to Japan during the winter. This break will enable me to have some holiday with my family, which isn't always the case.
Soumillon is using time to reflect on the severing of links with the Aga Khan, for whom he rode the great Zarkava to victory in last year's Arc, arace he had also won with the owner's Dalakhani in 2003.
"I am spending more time with my dogs and the horses," he said. "I also have more time to travel and think about other things apart from my injury." "
