Legendary stallion Danehill (Danzig - Razyana) was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame last night. This breed shaping stallion was brought to Australia as one of the early shuttle stallions by John Messara of Arrowfield Stud. He stood at Arrowfield under a joint venture with Coolmore Australia before he was eventually purchased outright by Coolmore, where he stood until his death from a paddock accident in Ireland on 13 May 2003.

I only ever photographed Danehill once. I had only been photographing horses for about 4 years when I photographed Danehill in December 1997. It was my first trip to the Hunter Valley and it proved to be an excruciatingly hot day. I photographed him early and it was still boiling.

Some photographers see themselves as an expert in their 'chosen' field when they haven't been doing it very long. This is simply not the case - even 5 years in you're still a beginner, pure and simple. And horses have a habit of gently reminding you that even after many years of working with them that there is still SO much to learn.

My images of Danehill are not perfect, because at that stage, when it came to photographing horses I was still a beginner. Regardless of this I am still immensely grateful that I have them.
