Black Caviar Brother Succumbs to Laminitis

Black Caviar (Aus)’s 2-year-old half-brother by Redoute’s Choice (Aus), affectionately known as “Jimmy”, was euthanized this morning at the Melbourne University Veterinary Hospital in Werribee, Victoria. The colt, purchased by BC3 Thoroughbreds for an Australian record of A$5 million at Inglis Easter earlier this year, was suffering from laminitis that is believed to have stemmed from an adverse reaction to antibiotics used to treat a spider bite in November. Inglis CEO Mark Webster revealed the news this morning on his blog, stating: “As a lover of all horses, but in particular the magnificent Thoroughbred, it is with a heavy heart that I write this post. At approximately 11am this morning the Redoute's Choice --Helsinge 2-year-old colt known as Jimmy was euthanized on humane grounds at the Melbourne University Veterinary Hospital in Werribee Victoria. Jimmy was suffering from laminitis, a painful hoof condition that impacts on the mobility of horses. It is believed the laminitis developed after suffering an adverse reaction to antibiotics, which were being used to treat his swollen leg when admitted to the Hospital in early November. Jimmy became a household name after setting a new record price as yearling at the 2013 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale reaching $5 million to the bid of BC3 Thoroughbreds. As the younger sibling to Champions Black Caviar and All Too Hard [Aus], we all had great expectations for Jimmy on the track and in the breeding barn. This is a very sad outcome for all involved. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the staff at the Werribee Hospital for their dedicated care, in particular to Dr Chris Whitton and his colleagues who monitored Jimmy throughout the Christmas period.”

Coolmore Acquires Rubick Interest

Coolmore Stud has announced that it has acquired an interest in boom Australian 2-year-old colt Rubick (Aus) (Encosta de Lago {Aus}--Sliding Cube {Aus}, by Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}), just ahead of Saturday’s G3 Blue Diamond Prelude S. at Caulfield. He will race for the existing partnership of David Raphael’s Stallion Racing, Teeley Assets and Neil Werrett and Coolmore, who will stand the colt at the conclusion of his racing career. Gerald Ryan will continue to train.

Coolmore Australia’s Tom Magnier said, "We’ve been looking for a son of Encosta de Lago, who is coming to the end of a great stud career, and we think we’ve found him in Rubick. He’s a particularly good-looking individual with unbelievable ability and a sensational stallion’s pedigree so he looks the real deal."

Produced by a 3/4-sister to the outstanding sire Redoute’s Choice (Aus) (Danehill), Rubick was purchased by Raphael for A$460,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast yearling sale in 2013, and the well-known media commentator and racing advisor is excited about the new partnership.

"Gerald Ryan has made no secret of the regard in which he holds this colt --he says he’s the best he’s trained--and as such we’ve been fielding expressions of interest in and offers for Rubick for quite some time," said Raphael. "However, the opportunity to partner with Coolmore, the most successful stud farming operation in the world, was an irresistible one and I hope that we are lucky together."

On the heels of a sparkling barrier trial, Rubick debuted with the weight of the world on his shoulders at Rosehill Jan. 25, streaking home by three lengths. The effort took him straight to the top of the ante-post markets for the G1 Golden Slipper S. in early April, though Ryan has yet to officially commit to the world’s richest juvenile race.

Rubick Flicks Away Prelude Foes

6th at CAU G3 BD Prelude S. (C&G) (A$150k) [1100m (T)] Winner: Rubick (Aus), c, 2 by Encosta de Lago (Aus)

A scant 90 minutes after Coolmore officials announced that they had purchased an interest in the outstanding 2-year-old colt Rubick (Aus) (Encosta de Lago {Aus}--Sliding Cube {Aus}, by Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}), the A$460,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast purchase ran his record to two wins in as many starts with a hard-fought victory in the colts and geldings division of the G3 Blue Diamond Prelude S. at Melbourne's Caulfield Racecourse. The colt was all the rage ahead of his Jan. 25 debut at Randwick in Sydney and made light work of that field, scoring by three lengths in fast time. Drawn in stall two in this field of 16, Rubick was under the gun early from Brenton Avdulla and eventually pressed through up the fence to lead after the opening quarter mile. He led comfortably in the middle stages and was forced to work for it in the final furlong, but held sway to take it by a length at 55 cents on the dollar before galloping out clear of his rivals. Jabali (Aus) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) ran nicely for second, finishing 3/4 of a length ahead of Chivalry (Aus) (Street Cry {Ire}) in third. Final time for the 1100 meters on a track rated a dead 4 was 1:03.71, the same time clocked by Earthquake in the Fillies' Prelude. While trainer Gerald Ryan was quick to commit Rubick to the G1 Blue Diamond S. in two weeks' time, he clearly left the door open for passing the G1 Golden Slipper S. and focusing instead on a spring campaign. Lifetime Record: 2-2-0-0, A$159,500. O-Stallion Racing, Jadeskye, Teeley Assets, Werrett Bloodstock Pty Ltd, Coolmore Stud. B-Teeley Assets Ltd. T-Gerald Ryan.

Black Caviar progressing well

In foal to Exceed And Excel, Werrett said the only issue with the 25 times unbeaten sprinter was keeping her voracious appetite under control.

“She’s going really well,” Werrett said. “All the scans are very clear and she’s due in early October.

“The biggest issue we’ve got with her is keeping the weight off her because she’s such a good doer.

“They’re doing a great job looking after her to make sure that she doesn’t put on too much weight during her pregnancy but it’s always a good thing to have a horse that eats well.”
