Tonalist Best in Belmont; California Chrome a Dead-Heat 4th

The Triple Crown is safe yet again. For the 36th consecutive year, no horse has been able to complete the sweep of the GI Kentucky Derby, GI Preakness S. and GI Belmont S. after Robert S. Evans's TDN Rising Star Tonalist (c, 3, Tapit--Settling Mist, by Pleasant Colony) outstayed his 10 rivals and was up in the waning strides to defeat Commissioner (A.P. Indy) by a neck in the final leg of the Triple Crown in front of better than 100,000 racegoers on Long Island. Medal Count (Dynaformer) sat an inside trip and came up the fence for third, while Triple Crown aspirant California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit) and his chief market rival Wicked Strong (Hard Spun) dead-heated for fourth. Tonalist, accorded Rising Star status off a four-length maiden victory at Gulfstream Park Jan. 19, was runner-up to subsequent GI Florida Derby hero Constitution (Tapit) in a very tough allowance in Hallandale Feb. 22. Forced to miss the Wood Memorial due to a minor illness, Tonalist instead prepped for this with a front-running victory over Commissioner in the GII Peter Pan S. May 11. No horse had completed the Peter Pan/Belmont double since A.P. Indy in 1992, but Tonalist was able to overcome a wide trip to break that streak and spoil the hopes of California Chrome. Drawn widest in the field of 11, Tonalist jumped well and raced prominently as Commissioner proved a somewhat surprising pacemaker. The Clement trainee stalked three wide and in the clear as a decent pace developed on the front end. California Chrome broke well and had the opportunity to go to the lead had they wanted, but Victor Espinoza elected to take back a bit and had his colt in a pocket as General a Rod (Roman Ruler) prompted Commissioner. Leaving the half-mile pole, Espinoza was able to get California Chrome to the outside and he had his chances four wide and outside of Tonalist at the head of the lane. But California Chrome was mostly up and down in the final furlong and Tonalist, out of a mare by staying influence Pleasant Colony, was able to call on his stamina to tag Commissioner on the wire. Lifetime Record: 5-3-1-0. O-Robert S Evans. B-Woodslane Farm (KY). T-Christophe Clement.
