STAKES Travers S. (Grade I) ( saratoga race 12 )

Purse $1,000,000. For Three Year Olds. No nomination fee. $10,000 to pass the entry box. All starters will receive a $5,000 rebate. The purse to be divided 60% to the winner, 20% to second, 10% to third, 5% to fourth, 3% to fifth and 2% divided equally among remaining finishers. 126 Lbs. Any horse that competes in both the Jim Dandy and the Travers will have their entry fee waived for the Travers. Trophies will be presented to the winning owner, trainer and jockey. Closed Saturday, August 14, 2010 with 24 Nominations. One And One Fourth Miles.

" Afleet Express had the lead as the 11-horse field turned for home Saturday, but Fly Down unleased a furious challenge before falling a nose short at the wire.

Share Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver finished out of the top three for his third straight defeat since winning the Run for the Roses on May 1.

First Dude finished third, with Afleet Again fourth in the 1 1/4-mile “Midsummer Derby.”

Afleet Express missed the Triple Crown races but won the Pegasus in June and was third in the Jim Dandy on July 31. "

"SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - It may not have been the classiest Travers field ever assembled but the 2010 edition will always be remembered as one of the most exciting after Afleet Express won a prolonged stretch battle with Fly Down by the bob of a nose. The pace-pressing First Dude held on to finish third.

Afleet Express slipped up the rail under jockey Javier Castellano in a move that ultimately led to his narrow victory. Fly Down rallied five wide into the stretch, got his nose in front between calls in late stretch only to lose the head bob on the wire. First Dude forced the pace of Miner's Reserve over the speed-favoring track but could not match strides with the top pair in the final furlong.

Trappe Shot, the tepid 7-2 favored, tired badly after racing forwardly and finished a well-beaten ninth. Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver also gave way badly at the end and checked home 10th in a field of 11 3-year-olds.

Afleet Express, one of three sons of Afleet Alex who competed in the Travers, is trained by James Jerkens for Martin Cherry and the Gainesway Farm. The winner completed 1 1/4 miles in 2:03.28 seconds over a fast track and paid $16. "
